This grilled garlic scapes recipe is a bright fresh way to enjoy summer sprouted garlic scapes! They’re soft, tender, and so flavorful. They’re lightly charred from the grill, and couldn’t be easier to make!

I love the fresh green scapes that sprout out of our homegrown garlic – and grilling them up is one of the best ways to enjoy them. You can also pickle garlic scapes too, which are equally as delicious. Toss these fantastic scapes on the grill for some major summer flavor.

We grew a ton of garlic in our garden this year, and all 80 of our plants sprouted these delicious scapes. Scapes are the curly thick flowering part of the garlic sprout, that grows up from the center of the plant. You can snap them off and enjoy eating them tons of ways. We pickled some for a delicious tangy snack – and they are so good grilled as well!

These grilled garlic scapes are fantastic tossed with some simple spices and olive oil, and hit with a little lemon juice right after you take them off the grill.  We enjoyed these with a grilled steak, some asparagus, and zucchini. The perfect summer dinner!

What’s In These Grilled Garlic Scapes?

See the recipe card below for full ingredient amounts and recipe instructions!

  • Garlic Scapes
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Red Chili Flakes: for a little heat! I like to add a few shakes to this recipe to give this dish a nice complex depth of flavor.
  • Lemon Pepper Seasoning – this salt free lemon pepper seasoning is one of our favorite low sodium spices! It brings a ton of flavor from real lemon and pepper corns, and is SO good in this recipe.
  • Lemon Juice
  • Sea salt

How Do I Grill Garlic Scapes?

  1. Clean the garlic scapes – wash them under cold water and snap off any dense ends of the stem.
  2. On a plate, toss the scapes with olive oil, salt, lemon pepper, and chili flakes. Mix well to combine, making sure all the scapes are coated with the oil and spice mixture.
  3. Put the scapes on the grill (we used a cast iron grill pan) and cook for 7 to 8 minutes, flipping halfway. The scapes should be soft and tender, and lightly charred.
  4. Remove scapes from the grill, and squeeze fresh lemon juice over the scapes. Enjoy!
